DRTF | Detonation Tube Digital Twins
Project type
Digital Twins
Location
Texas A&M
Role
Art Direction, Lead Lighting, Lead Look Development, Modeling
Located at the Texas A&M University System RELLIS Campus, the Detonation Research Test Facility (DRTF) stands as a testament to the groundbreaking research led by Dr. Elaine Oran - (https://lnkd.in/gehmNjjB), a globally recognized expert on the dynamics of explosions. The DRTF's mission is to delve into the complex interactions between flammable gases and materials, investigating the conditions under which these substances can lead to massive detonations.
A remarkable feature of the DRTF is its extensive infrastructure, highlighted by a steel tube that measures 150 meters in length and 2 meters in diameter, with walls 3/4 inch thick. This robust construction is critical for safely conducting experiments on a scale that truly captures the enormity of detonation phenomena.
Further enhancing the capabilities of the DRTF is an ambitious project led by Dr. Jian Tao (https://tx.ag/jtao) to develop a digitaltwin of the facility at the Texas A&M RELLIS campus. This digital twin aims to be a virtual counterpart of the DRTF, providing capabilities for near real-time simulation, prediction, and optimization of the facility's operations. Such technological advancements promise to revolutionize the way researchers understand and manipulate the variables at play in detonation processes.
The 3D visualization was created by Sina Alidosut salimi and Britain Thomas, two MS students from the College of Performance Visualization & Fine Arts.
My role in this project involved Art direction, lighting and look development, within Unreal Engine 5. I was also responsible for creating the base meshes using Rhinoceros 3D and Autodesk 3ds Max. All meshes were later remodeled into polygons by Britain Thomas in Autodesk Maya, who also handled the hard surface modeling of the details.
